Power Rankings: Short-track madness begins
http://msn.foxsports.com/name/public.../Cup/PowerPoll by JORGE A. MONDACA, FOXSports.com - Updated: March 12, 2008, 3:42 PM EST After weeks of racing on long, wide-open tracks at Daytona, California, Las Vegas and Atlanta, drivers skills — and patience — will be tested often as the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series sets its sights on short-tracks. This weekend's race marks the 1-st of 4 races in a 6-week span on tracks that are 1-mile or shorter. What better way to start the short-track madness than by kicking things off at Bristol Motor Speedway. What makes Bristol so unique? Think of it as NASCAR's version of the Roman Colosseum — tight quarters, driver's battling for survival, and oh yeah, over 150,000 bloodthirsty spectators expecting a spectacle. "It's pretty different," said Kasey Kahne of racing at Bristol. "There aren't too many other places we race where you can leave with a top 10 and have a race car that's pretty beat up and maybe even been wrecked. I really don't know of another track you can compare it to though. It's a short track like Martinsville but it is really fast which you can kind of compare to some place like Dover with the concrete. It's just a different track to race. "I look forward to racing just because you really never know what to expect, which makes it fun and challenging." But who will survive to celebrate in front of the masses? Here's a look at the top drivers so far this season and their outlook for this weekend. Power Rankings heading into this week's Sprint Cup race at Bristol 1. Kyle Busch — 125.9 driver rating: 2. Carl Edwards — 111.7 3. Jeff Gordon — 105.7 4. Dale Earnhardt Jr. — 101.9 5. Greg Biffle — 101.3 6. Kevin Harvick — 99.8 7. Matt Kenseth — 97.4 8. Tony Stewart — 94.1 9. Ryan Newman — 92.8 10. Jeff Burton — 91.6 The statistics used to determine the final numeric value are: Wins, finishes, Top-15 results, average running position while on lead lap, average speed under green, fastest lap, led most laps and lead-lap finishes. The system has a maximum of 150 points per race. And drivers must have raced in 75 percent of scheduled point-paying races to be included in this rating.

Rain washes out qualifying for Sunday's Food City 500
http://www.nascar.com/2008/news/head...led/index.html By NASCAR.COM - March 14, 2008 - 05:31 PM EDT Persistent rain kept track time at a minimum on Friday at Bristol Motor Speedway, resulting in officials canceling qualifying for Sunday's Sprint Cup race. The grid for the Food City 500 was set according to the NASCAR rulebook. The first five races of the season rely on the previous year's owner points, thus Jimmie Johnson will start from the pole and teammate Jeff Gordon will line up second. Clint Bowyer, Matt Kenseth and Casey Mears round out the top five qualifiers. Current Sprint Cup points leader Kyle Busch will roll off 22nd based off of the No. 18 points from last season. Cup drivers did manage to get in the first practice session on Friday as David Reutimann paced the field with a speed of 121.713 mph. But after the practice ended, rain began to fall at the track, washing out qualifying and two practices for the Nationwide Series. Saturday's schedule calls for Nationwide Series qualifying and two Cup Series practices, in addition to the Sharpie Mini 300 scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. The forecast for Saturday calls for thunderstorms with highs reaching 58 degrees. Complete Lineup http://www.nascar.com/races/cup/2008/5/data/lineup.html Food City 500 Lineup Pos. Driver Make 1.
